Tips for the Proper Use of Backpacks

Back to school. In some schools, pre-schools and nurseries they began, in others, the return will be in the next few days. And a subject that tends to raise a few questions this time of year is the question of the use of the Backpack: what’s the ideal model to be used, which is the maximum weight that the child can bear, how to calculate this weight, how to distribute it appropriately in the things of the child and that damage can occur if these precautions are not taken.

To answer this and other questions, I bring today an interview with chiropractor Jason Gilbert, author of the book the secret of Healthy Column.

Which Model Of Satchel That Least Impairs The Column?

The most appropriate model is what has the two adjustable shoulder straps and possibly a strap which goes on waist. Moreover, it should have a padded back to minimize weight in column and avoid injury and on the skin. Ideally, the backpack has your background in the area of the lumbar spine. That’s because when is loose, pull the body behind, causing the person curve their shoulders to acquire the balance. “Regardless of the type of fashion sports backpack, she should not be loaded on one side of the body,” says the expert.

How Should Be Done The Calculation To See If The Bag Is Too Heavy?

Before doing any calculation we have to see if the child has to change the attitude to carry the bag, it’s easy to see, if it is too heavy the child usually will play the body forward to compensate for the weight behind. “Therefore, the weight of the backpack should not exceed 5% to 10% of the weight of the child”.

How Should Be Done The Weight Distribution In The Backpacks?

The distribution of material should be organized so that the notebooks and heavier books stay against the column, and the material will not be released to that it does not cause imbalance in student movements.

What Is The Right Time For The Child/Student Load The Backpack?

The backpack should be positioned adjusted to body at waist line, always as high as possible, so that the posture is not impaired.

Load The Backpack On One Shoulder Is Harmful?

Yes. Because when using the Backpack on one shoulder all the student might end up raising the other shoulder, that is without the strap of the backpack, to compensate for the weight. Thus, due to the one-sided weight there is an imbalance in the column. Thus, load this kind of bag can cause scoliosis, headache, backache and pain in the fingers.

Tie The Bag In The Abdominal Area Can Help Prevent Back Problems?

Yes. Helps in weight distribution and gives greater support.

The Wheel Can Also Harm The Column?

Usually less. However, if it’s too low the height of the rod and the child have to change the attitude to pull the bag is harmful. “The bags of” training wheels “must have your stem to a height in the back of the student stay straight to pull it, so that there is no overload of the hip or knee,” alert.

What’s The Damage That Excess Weight Can Cause The Column?

Overweight backpacks can cause various problems in children and adolescents. In addition to the known back pain in the long run, the backpack can lead to more serious problems such as: scoliosis (lateral deviation of the spine), kyphosis (curvature of the spine spine which promotes the arching of the back and makes the person stay hunchback) and hyperlordosis (accentuation of the scoop low back).
