Gadgets: Before the snow had time to digest here in Sweden pulls the big bike travel season started. Our meck expert Henry van Ingelandt share their best packing list.
Travelling by bicycle requires preparation and planning. Both for it to go fast and painless to get down cycle in the carrying case, and that the bike will arrive unharmed.
One way to take your bike on the flight is actually simply take your bike exactly as it is.The airlines usually think that it is okay as long as you remove the pedals, turn the handlebars and let the air out of the tires. Some travel with their standard bikes in this way, but it’s not something we would recommend for your finest jewels, as you risk everything from cosmetic scratches to the frame breakage.
The cheapest option is a regular bike cardboard bike shops often give away to those who ask nicely. It is spacious, and you can easily fit more than just packing the bike, such as helmet, shoes and clothing in bags. Unpack the bike in a box, you do not dismount the rear derailleur, because the bike is in the box with the rear wheel and rear derailleur in place. It is not, however, for as many trips, and is large and unwieldy if you’re further from the airport by taxi or private car.
Try to get in a big cardboard box as possible, it is always easier to fit everything then.Take off the pedals and front wheel. Use some tape and mark your saddle height on the post before lowering or removing it completely. Depending on the carton and the cycle size, you have to dismount handlebar and stem, but hopefully it is enough to just turn it. Always turn the handlebars to the left. The front brake on a race has namely cable on the right side in the direction of travel, and turn the handlebars to the right of the brake will be hitting the frame. Put a piece of tape on the handlebars and mark out the stem gap with an ink pen on the tape, before loosening the front screws and twist the handlebar around the frame. Now it will be easy to get back the government in the same angle as before when you mount the bike again. Then, just to lift the bike and all the parts in the box and tape it securely. Make sure to also pack the packing tape somewhere before the trip home.
Soft Cover Case
Soft Cover Case is both cheaper and more lavish variants. A simple unpadded bag you can easily enhance the inside with large pieces of cardboard, seat cushions from the outdoor furniture and the like padding. Pipe insulation from the plumbing store and bubble wrap also protects the good. Add your bicycle clothes in bags and shove, so you also get extra protection while pulling down on luggage weight on your regular suitcase.
Soft Cover bag is usually smaller than both the bike box and hard shell case, and it is also ductile, which is an advantage if the bag has to be booked it in that little taxi at the airport. This is also why soft shell bag is the most durable option, because it shapes itself and give in a little. There are also semi-soft varieties with wheels on – a little more expensive, but you do not have to lug the bag.
Remove the pedals and both wheels and put them in soft protective wheeled bags. Stop the quick couplings, and the pedals in the pockets of wheeled suitcases, or in another place that is easy to remember RELATIONSHIPSPLUS when buying bike lights. Use some tape and mark your saddle height on the post before lowering or removing the seatpost completely. Use a little more tape and an ink pen to mark where you usually have the handlebars before you turn the handlebars to the left and loosen the front stem bolts. Continue turning the handlebars around the frame’s top tube if possible. Remove the rear derailleur to protect the adjuster and the dropout. Linda then the rear derailleur, for example, a towel padding and attached the whole package in the chain using cable ties.
